Positive & Negative numbers are displayed on a number line. Every number to the right of 0 is positive and any number to the left is a negative number.

Adding and subtracting integers:
Examples of positive and negative numbers in equations:
-4+5=x
-2-4=x
3+(-2)=x
In an addition problem, if the signs are different, you subtract and take the sign of the bigger number. For this problem, take the bigger number (5) and subtract the smaller number (4) from it. You take the sign of the bigger number and since 5 is bigger than 4, and it is positive, the answer is positive 1.
-2-4=-6
In a subtraction problem, the first number stays the same. You change the subtraction sign into an addition sign and then, you change the sign of the second number and work it like an addition problem (see above). -2+(-4)=-6
3+( -2)=1
Since each number has a different sign, you will subtract. Take the larger number and subtract it with the smaller number. Then, take the sign of the largest number. Your sum will be 1.

Multiplying and dividing integers:
Multiplication:
-5 * -4 = 205 * 4 = 20
-5 * 4 = -20
5 * -4 = -20
- * - = +
+ * + = +
- * + = -
+ * - = -
Division:
20 / 5 =420 / -5=-4
-20 / -5=4
-20 / 5= -4
- / - = +
+ / + = +
- / + = -
+ / - = -
